The Pill’s Impact on the Practice of Sex.

By using practice theory as a central framework, we sought to examine how the contraceptive pill had influenced the practice of sex.

This included thinking about; how did the innovation affect competencies & knowledge, norms & meanings, material & non-material elements of sex; how has this innovation developed, and what inspired its development?

By analysing the impact of the pill on the practice of sex, the need for more thought and action when answering ethical questions regarding the consequences of gendered innovations in the wider world is made salient. While a causal link is difficult to prove, we found it was highly likely that the pill’s invention influenced the development of sex-related innovations and specialised equipment. With the pill shifting norms and beliefs held around sex being for reproduction, rather than pleasure.
